Fr. Tyrrell was born on April 6, 1963 in Brentwood, NY to Wilfred and Dorothy Tyrrell. He was educated in Brentwood, NY schools. In 1981, he received his BA degree in English literature and religious studies from the State University of New York at Stonybrook.
In 1988, Fr. Tyrrell joined the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement at Graymoor. In 1990, he received an MA degree in biblical studies from Fordham University, and a Masters of Divinity degree from Catholic University, Washington D.C. While at Catholic University, Fr. Tyrrell was a member of the National Council of Christians and Jews; was involved with Hispanic parish ministries; and taught English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for the Archdiocese of Washington, DC. While at the seminary, Fr. Tyrrell studied and worked with Monsignor Wilfredo Peña in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He recently finished his MA in Social and Political Philosophy from California State University in Los Angeles.
Fr. Tyrrell made his final profession of vows in September 1993 at Graymoor. In September 1993, he was assigned to St. Odilia's -- a Spanish-speaking parish in Los Angeles. He was ordained a deacon in October 1993 at St. Odilia's; and was ordained a priest on June 25, 1994. In June of 2000, he was named Pastor of that parish. While in Los Angeles, Fr. Tyrrell was co-chair of the Lutheran and Catholic Bilateral; a member of the Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Orthodox (LARCO) Retreat; and was on the executive board of the Southern Californian Ecumenical Council (SCEC) for three years. He is fluent in Spanish and has worked primarily in Hispanic ministries. He has been involved in grassroots ecumenism since 1993 when he was assigned temporarily to the Pastoral Team of St. Joseph's Church in Yonkers, NY.
Since returning to New York, served as the Director of the Commission on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs in the Archdiocese of New York, presently Fr. Wilfred is the Catholic Chaplain at Manhattan College.
Fr. Tyrrell is also involved with the community of Holy Cross Church in New York City.
